| Redgums include a
very widespread species, the forest redgum, found along most of the east
coast of Australia and into Papua New Guinea. It can grow as high as 40 meters. As the bark falls away it leaves whitish or bluish patches of
color and because of this is called bluegum in Queensland. The most
widespread member of the group is the striking river redgum, made famous
by the painter Hans Heysen.
It is found on most river banks in mainland Australia where its roots can tap the water stored in the sands. It does well in areas with an annual rainfall between 250 and 600 millimeters. |

| The tree can be small and slender or a massive giant with a huge bole. In some favored places, such as the flood plains of the Murray River, it can reach heights of 50 meters. Because of its rapid growth and ability to survive in dry areas it has been planted in many countries. In Australia it ranges over all the mainland states although in the eastern coastal regions it is replaced by the forest redgum, a closely related species. | ![]() |
